License/Certification/Registration:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State Board of Nurse Examiners. Previous in nursing with strong focus on gerontological and/or rehabilitation service programs.
Continuing Education:
As required by federal and state law.
Job knowledge:
Knowledge and ability to apply basic principles of nursing care ! in accordance with state nursing acts and standards.
Knowl! edge and demonstrated capacity for leadership skills in the design, implementation and evaluation of nursing care programs, which are coordinated with the total health care of the resident.
Understanding of:
- Administering personal hygienic and therapeutic measures for residents and techniques within the parameters of the nurse practice act.
- Proper techniques for the delivery of medications and treatments.
- Documentation in the medical record that reflects the resident's condition, medication and treatments.
- Prevention of disease and application of universal precautions.
- Experience in care of the elderly, chronically ill, restorative nursing, unit management and quality assurance.
- Understanding of roles and functions of all levels of nursing staff and total health care team.
- Knowledge in the development of staff and management of personnel in an environment which enhances the highest standards ! of nursing care.
- Capability for independent decision-making formulation and delegation of responsibility.
The Assistant Director of Nursing Services is responsible for monitoring infection control, restorative nursing, and participates in the quality improvement activities. This position assists the Director of Nursing with planning, direction and evaluation of effective and comprehensive nursing care practices, which promote, maintain and restore the well being of all the residents to their highest level of practical functioning. During the absence of the Director of Nursing, the Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for the nursing department.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work indoors in well-lighted and ventilated wards and rooms. May need to work beyond normal working hours or in other positions temporarily when necessary. May be required to work on weekends and holidays, and possibly on other shifts other than the one ! hired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Good physical and mental health. M! ust be able to withstand strenuous physical activity. Job requires: intermittent standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting in excess of 100 pounds on occasion – 20%, and frequently lifting of up to 25 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, or otherwise move objects including the human body, fine motor coordination, ability to communicate with residents, personnel and consultants, ability to distinguish smells, tastes and temperatures, ability to hear and respond to verbal stimuli and to hear blood pressure rate to monitor vital signs, a keen sense of vision necessary for close inspection and attention to minute details and small objects, the ability to quickly detect and react to slight motions and/or the ability to accurately distinguish colors, ability to read and write, and ability to remain calm under stress. Manual dexterity to handle instruments and equipment is necessary.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
Must have the ability to communicate with res! idents, families, and personnel and ability to remain calm under stress.
Principle contacts: Is involved with residents, co-workers, visitors, and government agencies/personnel, etc.
Exposure Risk: Tasks assigned to this position may involve potential and/or direct exposure to blood/body fluids. May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, etc., including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B virus and TB. Loud noise on occasion. A possibility of cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment. May be exposed to communicable diseases. Possibility of strains due to moving residents or injury from irrational residents.
