The University of Pittsburgh Physicians and UPMC-Mercy Hospital Department of Anesthesiology is seeking candidates for the first University of Pit! tsburgh School of Medicine E.S. Siker Chair of Anesthesiology. This endowed Professorship recognizes national and international eminence in the field of Anesthesiology with the successful candidate demonstrating excellence and experience in academic medicine and commitment to service, teaching, and research. The position requires strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with a vision for patient centered care and medical education.

Dr. Siker’s impact on the specialty of Anesthesiology in the United States and the world at large is monumental. He has been a visionary in the specialty, responsible for the first halothane anesthetic in the United States, serving as President of the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Director of the American Board of Anesthesiology. In 1972, Dr. Siker was chosen by then President Nixon to lead a medical team during his visit to China. Dr. Siker’s receipt of the ASA’s Dis! tinguished Service Award, his training of several future acade! mic chairs of anesthesiology departments, his service as the Rovenstine Lecturer at the ASA Annual Meeting, and at the end of his active career, his impassioned role as Executive Director of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation are all testaments of Dr. Siker’s influence. There is no better example of an individual who had a great impact upon the specialty.

The University of Pittsburgh Physicians provides physician and support services through a multispecialty practice plan throughout the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. UPMC is ranked no. 1 in Pennsylvania and no. 10 overall and in 14 adult specialties by U.S. News and World Report.

UPMC Mercy is a large tertiary-care hospital located in the uptown district of Pittsburgh, with a rich history, from its beginning as the first permanent hospital in Pittsburgh and the first Mercy hospital in the world, and continuing as a provider of faith-based care to its patient population, including the unde! rserved in our region. The hospital remains the only Catholic hospital in the region to provide specialized services, including women’s health, neurological, cardiac, and orthopedic care, as well as serving as a Neuroradiology Stroke Intervention, Level 1 Trauma and Adult and Pediatric Burn Center. The hospital has been a focal point for teaching of students and residents from the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Nursing for many years and continues to provide educational experience for our residents in multiple specialties, including neuro- and cardiothoracic anesthesia.
