Job Description:
Under general supervision of a registered nurse, the Support Associate provides patient transport, patient care, and environmental functions. The Support Associate is responsible for transport, housekeeping, and patient care duties to facilitate patient comfort and an efficient work flow in the Operating Room.
The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs patient transports.
2. Provides surgical and diagnostic preps as ordered.
3. Performs daily operating room cleaning, using proper technique and chemical usage.
4. Performs necessary functions to ensure patient comfort and prioritize work load to facilitate an efficient work flow in the Operating Room.
5. Maintains and trouble shoots rolling stock.
6. Maintains clean and orderly cleaning cart and janitor closet.
7. Communicate with the unit based team regarding change in condition and unit concerns.
8. Restocks and collects unit supplies and equipment as needed.
9. Accepts responsibility for providing safe, appropriate and quality patient care.
10. Demonstrates competency in assigned scope of functions.
11. Takes active part in QA/QI.
12. Assists in training new staff.
13. Maintains confidentiality of all material handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.
14. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
15. Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
16. Demonstrates performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process and Safety.
17. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
18. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding
FUNCTIONS:
1. Other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting 2 hours per day, 1 hour at a time. Standing 5 hours per day, 1 hour at a time. Walking 8 hours per day, 10 minutes at a time. Frequent fingering and handling with occasional grasping.
Continuously lift, carry and/or push objects up to 10 pounds. Frequently lift, carry and/or push objects up to 75 pounds.
Transport patients via stretchers, wheelchairs and/or beds.
Frequently stoop, bend, crouch and reach above shoulder level.
Perceive attributes of object through touch.
Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.
SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
Goggles, gloves, gowns, masks (with and without face shield) glasses with side shields, lead aprons and collars for radiation exposure.
Follows MSDS and OSHA precautions for exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
Exposed to cuts/punctures, small spaces, slippery surfaces, assault/battery, radiation, chemical and biological hazards. Security training for assaults.
Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CEC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.
MOST COMPLEX DUTIES ARE:
Perform patient care duties to facilitate patient comfort and prioritize workload to facilitate an efficient work flow in the O.R.
SUPERVISION (RECEIVED AND/OR GIVEN):
Supervised by the Patient Care Manager/Nurse Manager/Director and Clinical Coordinator. Patient Care provided is directed by a professional nurse.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Must be able to communicate with various levels of customers. Verbal and written skills are important.

EDUCATION:
High School graduate/GED required.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Orientation to position with inservices and training. CPR certification.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Day, middle or night shifts with varying hours based on the needs of the department.
