Job Summary:
This position manages two mission critical areas of the HIM Department.

Directing and managing the coding and abstracting staff that are responsible for coding of all types of hospital records, this includes coder's on-site and remote coders. Responsible for initiating, coordinating and maintaining control of these areas at the level of performance which will ensure meeting the department's goals and objectives, production turnaround time and standards for quality. This position is responsible for managing the Accounts Receivable File for the facility and problem solving thro! ugh interaction with various clinical and registration areas t! o obtain data necessary to code all patients records. This position manages the Discharges Not Final Billed Report. Provides departmental and job specific orientation for newly hired personnel.

Developing, coordinating and managing the overall quality and completeness of clinical documentation to accurately represent the severity, acuity, and risk of mortality profile of the patient being treated. Exhibiting thorough knowledge of the clinical documentation requirements as they relate to the classification systems, MS-DRG assignment, and clinical conditions and treatment needs of the patient population. The most critical portion of this Documentation Improvement Program is to educate members of the patient care team and others regarding documentation guidelines to accurately reflect the health care needs of the patient.

In addition, directing the capture of data necessary to support the reimbursement process beginning with a documentation program which cons! ist of development, generation, and presentation of critical findings related to ongoing documentation issues. Directing the Clinical Documentation Improvement Nurse in conducting the daily review of documentation and the query process between the Medical Staff and the HIM Coders to accurate reflect care provided and addressing the needs of the patient.

Skills & Abilities:
Must possess analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to prepare reports and interpret data.

Requires excellent coding skills and experience in coding all types of medical records; inpatient, same day surgery, outpatient diagnostic and emergency room. Must be able to code under various coding systems as necessary, i.e. ICD-9, ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS. Must have good management and communication skills to effectively communicate required data elements to support the coding function. Must have ability to interact effectively with physicians and their office ! staff to communicate needed information to support correct and proper c! oding of records.

Must have excellent PC skills, must know how coding function interrelates to billing and reimbursement in an acute care facility. Must be familiar with various coding software applications, fax and copy equipment and associated programs and software as necessary.

Qualifications

:

Training & Education:
Must have an Associate or Bachelor degree in Health Information Management. Must have training as a supervisor or as trainer of coders. An in-depth knowledge of the National Coding Guidelines, AHA Coding Clinic and all applicable federal, state, and private insurers requirements, policies, and procedures. Must have excellent communication skills in both written and verbal form. Preferred additional credential is Certified Coding Specialist of the American Health Information Management Association.

Experience:
Must have 3-5 years ICD-9, CPT, HCPCS coding experience in all types of patients' rec! ords in an acute care facility. Prior management experience at a supervisory level is necessary. Applicants with experience in the following medical record applications will have a positive review but applicants without this experience will be trained in necessary skills. The applications utilized in the Medical Record Department at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children are: PBAR System both the ADT and Billing/Financial applications, 3 M Encoder, CARDS coding and CDI programs.

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position is responsible for supervising 10-12 medical record staff primarily responsible for the coding and abstracting of data from patients' medical records. This supervision includes monitoring for both quantity and quality of work performed. Also includes the performance of coding and abstracting work whenever absences or overflow of work occurs to meet and maintain the current Tenet work standard.

Also includes supervision of a nurs! e auditor who will review for clinical documentation shortfall.
Required Licenses:
This position requires certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), and/or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
