Job Summary:
Coordinate the system for identifying and tracking all infants requiring ROP examinations, based on guidelines ! provided by the ophthalmologist and neonatologist while meeting the guidelines of the ROP protocols. Maintain and update the ROP tracking system in coordination with neonatologists and ophthalmologists for both in-patients and out-patients at all sites where care is rendered by the SCPA Ophthalmologists. Ensure an accurate ROP list each week for ophthalmology rounds in the NICUs covered by the SCPA Ophthalmologists. Coordinate and teach ROP educational sessions for nursing staff. Supports the Ophthalmologist in performance both at bedside and in the operating room during laser treatments Coordinate and provide bedside assistance to the ophthalmologist in the use of the RetCam for documentation of ROP in both the SCHC NICU and out-patient office. Support utilization of the RetCam in telemedicine to support outside NICUs under the direction of the SCPA Ophthalmologists. Assist with education to support this endeavor. Facilitate communication between NICU and ophthalmologists.! Facilitate communication between parents and NICU nursing sta! ff regarding ROP status. Coordinate follow-up scheduling for ROP examinations, including transition to out-patient status or other health care facilities. Coordinate obtaining medical records from outside institutions on children discharged from outside NICUs to SCPA Ophthalmology to support the first office visit. Follows through with SCPA no-show policy for all ROP children who fail to follow up with scheduled appointments. Educate office staff and Call Center Staff on the phone screening to know how to identify babies who need ROP care. Maintain proficiency on the SCPA appointment scheduling system to assist with ROP appointments and appointment review with regard to ROP care. Ensure that along with the ROP database, all office charts are properly documented to reflect the ROP status and follow-through. Ensure and document that parents are made to understand the potential for severe visual loss, including blindness; and that appropriate educational materials have been pr! ovided to the parent on the severity of the diagnosis. Work with Ophthalmologist and Neonatologist to identify a NICU and out-patient back-up for time off to support ROP. Participate in research projects within the Section of Ophthalmology. Provide preoperative assessment on all patients within the Section of Ophthalmology identified as requiring surgical intervention. Ensure that pre-operative medical consultations are ordered and performed prior to the scheduled date of surgery.

NOTE: Some of the above tasks may be delegated to others on the NICU team as appropriate while ensuring that tracking of services occurs.

Skills & Abilities:
Ability to work in both NICU and Ophthalmology out-patient setting

Computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook in order to create and maintain spreadsheets and generate letters and patient educational material

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychological, developmental, social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in their service area.

Qualifications

Training & Education:
Masters in Nursing

Graduate of an accredited Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program

Experience:
3+ years experience in pediatric nursing, NICU experience preferred

Supervisory Responsibility:
None

Required Licenses :
Licensure to practice as a registered nurse in Pennsylvania

Licensure to practice as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Pennsylvania
