JOB SUMMARY

The Lactation Consultant is skilled in assessment, p! lanning, implementation, and evaluation to assist the breastfeeding mother to attain her individual goals. The Lactation Consultant functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team as a consultant, educator, and mentor to nurses, healthcare professionals, and patients. Consistently demonstrates behaviors that model the Hospital's core values and mission statement.

Qualifications

:

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
1. Proficient or fluent in Spanish (preferred)

2. Verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with patients, patients' families, staff, physicians, and ancillary departments.

3. Good math skills and basic computer data entry skills.

4. Analytical skills necessary to organize and prepare plan of care.

5. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing professional breastfeeding consultation.

6. Knowledge of nursing process, special! breastfeeding situations, current trends, and developments in! the area of practice.

7. Good problem solving skills.

8. Ability to walk and stand continuously (up to 80% of work time).

9. Knowledge of newborn assessment.

10. Must be proficient in required competencies upon completion of orientation, as listed on the unit specific competency inventory.

11. Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and to react swiftly and appropriately in emergency situations.

12. Knowledge of Pharmaceuticals and the effects on lactation ante partum, intrapartum, postpartum patients and newborns to toddlers. Able to identify the appropriate route and dosing, desired effects, complications, and recognition of adverse reactions.

13. Knowledge of managed care principles to include case, disease and demand management, access standards and benefit entitlements.

14. Proficient or fluent in Spanish (preferred)

15. Has established network connections in Philadelphia breastfe! eding community.

16. Ability to present conferences/didactics on Breastfeeding.

17. Understands barriers to Breastfeeding in low income and underserved communities.

1. Human Development knowledge/skills, basic pediatric/maternal assessment skills.

Minimum Position Qualifications:
1. Education: RN/BSN

2. Experience: Minimum! of 5 years experience with inpatient and outpatient lactation consulta! tions

3. License / Certification: Certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) through International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE)

4. License / Certification: Registered Nurse or Registered Dietician
