The essential functions of the position include but are not limited to:
Provided supportive nursing care to selected patients under direction and supervision of the professional nurse! ; facilitates patient care by meeting specific nursing care re! quirements and assists in performance of patient care measures; informs the registered nurse of any signs, symptoms of untoward responses.
1. Need for environmental safety, comfort.
a. Identifies patient according to HUP Policy before carrying out functions.
b. Carries out HUP fire and safety regulations.
c. Promotes infection control:
1) Washes hands before and after patient contact.
2) Carries out isolation procedures according to Infection Control Manual. Deals with blood
and body fluids according to the standard precautions policy.
3) Reports needle stick injuries to charge nurse.
4) Reports exposure to communicable diseases and infections.
2. Clinical Aseptic Technique
a. Demonstrates principles of aseptic technique in clinical practice.
b. Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies.
c. Sterilizes instruments and supplies in autoclaves as directed by Perioperative policies.
d. Follows depa! rtment policy on scrubbing, setup, gowning and gloving.
e. Observes for contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique.
f. Drapes the patient with sterile materials in the manner directed by the surgeon or RN circulator.
g. Demonstrates proper handling of implants and prosthesis.
h. Demonstrates the ability to differentiate between clean and dirty areas i.e. Endoscopy Unit.
i. Follows proper procedure for handling contaminated instruments after procedure i.e. cleans case cart after removing instruments.
j. Uses appropriate instrument tables for each case i.e. back and side tables.
3. Professionalism
a. Demonstrates awareness of legal responsibilities regarding instrument, needles and sponge counts.
b. Follows policy for case with incorrect counts, reports and documents discrepancies appropriately.
c. Counts and signs items as dictated per OR count policies.
d. Follows safe practice when drugs and solutions are placed on the ster! ile field.
e. Labels all drugs and solutions properly.
f. Assis! t in the proper labeling, handling of all surgical specimens.
g. Utilizes policies and procedures as a resource.
h. Routinely attends clinic and Perioperative in-service programs
i. Follows Perioperative Call Policy.
4. Collaboration
a. Demonstrates the ability to facilitate each case progression in a timely manner.
b. Anticipates the surgeonâs need when passing instruments, sutures, and supplies.
c. Provides relief staff with accurate report i.e. medications, specimens, and relief counts.
d. Knows when to seek help
e. Willingly adapts when there are schedule changes.
f. Expedites surgery by scrubbing and setting up supplies in a timely manner i.e. prepping, draping.
g. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon in order to expedite the surgical procedure.
5. Technical Skills
a. Modifies scrubbing procedures based on patientâs individual needs.
b. Communicates with team members for special care needs.
c. Incorporates! pertinent patient care information into scrubbing role.
d. Recognizes pertinent patient care information that requires modifying standard approach to care i.e. needing larger retractors.
e. Demonstrates knowledge and responds appropriately to emergency situations.
f. Proficient in two specialty areas.
6. Initiative
a. Makes professional use of downtime: stocking suture, returning unused supplies.
b. Maintains responsibility for specialty area and is held accountable for that specific area..
c. Consistently and willingly acts as team player i.e. assist RN with patient care.
d. Helps gather needed supplies for procedure i.e. positioning devices, instrumentation, and scopes.
7. Problem Solving
a. Identifies, isolates, and reports defective instruments, supplies and equipment.
b. Maintains a safe environment through inspection of facilities by applying safety rules.
c. Inventories, receives, and stores supplies under the d! irection of Nurse Manager.
d. Inventories instrument sets and recom! mends necessary changes to Nurse Manager.
e. Updates pick-list as necessary.
f. Completes Perioperative core and specialty team competencies.
8. Communications
a. Demonstrates active communication skills

b. Reports practice problems to appropriate individuals and problem solves.

Minimum Requirements
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Electro-cautery equipment, oxygen tanks, nitrogen tanks, automatic electric tourniquets, autoclaves, steris machines, various saws and drills, operating room tables, microscopes, special endoscopic instrumentation, electronic and manual vital sign monitors, electronic and manual thermometers, case carts, washer sterilizers, and endoscopic ultrasonic cleaner
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
High School Graduate. Certification as Surgical Technologist or graduation from an approved practical nurse program or 5-7 years related medical or ! hospital based surgical experience in lieu of certification. Must be able to read, comprehend and write English. Possess three year of continuous recent surgical technologist experience.
INITIATIVE, JUDGMENT, AND CREATIVE ABILITY:
Make observations-plan and organize work, assess patient needs under the supervision of registered nurse. Must be a self-starter; able to work quickly and efficiently without constant direction. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in his/her assigned area.
MENTAL, VISUAL AND HEARING DEMANDS:
Speaks and understands English. Speaking and listening for communicating with patients, nurses, doctors, families and visitors. Visual acuity for accurate reading of gauges, thermometers, set sheets, and examination of instruments for proper functioning. Must be mentally alert at all times.
